Visiting Solvang During the US 101 Buellton Ramp Closures

Solvang Is Open: Your Danish Escape Awaits

There’s something unmistakable about Solvang. Windmill sails against a blue sky, the smell of fresh-baked pastries, an afternoon spent wandering from wine tasting room to bakery to boutique.

The US 101 pavement project in neighboring Buellton, a key access point into Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley, moves into a new stage on Wednesday, September 30. From then until early November, the northbound off-ramp and the southbound on-ramp at State Route 246 will be fully closed while crews rebuild them, and the current lane reductions on US 101 stay in place. The full project is expected to wrap up in March 2027.

With a little route planning, getting here remains easy, and your time in Solvang is just as charming and worth the trip as ever.

What to Expect

As you plan your visit, here’s what to keep in mind:

Getting to Solvang

  • State Route 154 remains open to motorists.

From Wednesday, September 30 to Early November

  • Northbound US 101 (from Santa Barbara and Los Angeles): the Highway 246 off-ramp is closed. Exit at Santa Rosa Road and follow Avenue of Flags to Highway 246.
  • Heading south when you leave: the southbound on-ramp at Highway 246 is closed. Take Avenue of Flags to the Santa Rosa Road on-ramp.

Please allow extra travel time, observe posted speed limits, and follow all detour and directional signage.

Brief Stops Near Gaviota, October 22 and 23

Coming north from Santa Barbara? Caltrans is clearing loose rock above northbound US 101 just north of the Gaviota Tunnel from 9 AM to 3 PM both days, weather permitting. The CHP will hold traffic for up to 15 minutes at a time, so allow a little extra time, plan to arrive in the late afternoon, or take State Route 154 over San Marcos Pass, which bypasses the work zone.

Still Happening This October

The detour is worth it. Harvest, Haunts & Happenings fills Solvang all month, with the SYV Scarecrow Fest, ghost tours, a haunted house and adults’ trick-or-treating at local wineries.
