What’s Fresh at the Wednesday Farmers Market

Every Wednesday from 2:30–6:00 pm on the 400 block of First Street, the Santa Barbara Farmers Market brings the best of local agriculture straight to downtown Solvang. March and April mean peak asparagus, tender artichokes, early strawberries, and sweet Ojai Pixie tangerines. April also brings fava beans and spring onions as the season shifts. It’s a great excuse to browse slowly and pick up something to enjoy before or after dinner.

Recipe Corner: What to Do with Peak-Season Asparagus

If you’ve wandered the Farmers Market, it’s likely you’ve seen the abundance of asparagus. Pick some up on your weekly walk through the 400 block and try something a little more interesting with it than usual.

Chef Budi Kazali of The Gathering Table in Solvang shared a seasonal ratatouille recipe for readers. It’s a dish that lets the asparagus do the talking while miso, mirin, and sake add just enough depth to make it feel special.

“Mendoza Family Farms periodically has asparagus, and usually that’s the mark of spring time. (Even if it’s ’90 degrees spring’). They are one of the only farms that would grow asparagus. When they have it, it’s time to put it on the menu, as it’s at its prime.”
